M.U.G.E.N, or Mugen as it is sometimes written is a freeware 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte written in C. First released in 1999 it was further developed for further four years only for the development to "hit a snag" in 2004, only for Elecbyte themselves to come back and release a new version of the engine in 2009 and has since continued developing the engine, with the long awaited 1.1 beta getting released on August 7 2013. Within the same week SaltyBet had been streaming Mugen AI matches nonetheless.

Elecbyte themselves have forgotten what the arconym they chose used to stand for, nonetheless the readme states that it started development as a Shoot'em up engine until Elecbyte realized there aren't many quality PC fighting games and therefore it morphed into what we have today. They were reportedly influenced by early PC conversions of titles like Street Fighter II
